Greenwashing

🇫🇷  Le greenwashing est une conséquence directe de la démocratisation de l’écologie au cours des dernières décennies. De nombreuses entreprises ont compris qu’une grande partie des consommateur.ice.x.s souhaitent se tourner vers des alternatives vertes à leur consommation habituelle et ont vu le potentiel financier que le secteur vert représente. Le terme greenwashing désigne donc des entreprises qui verdissent leur image sans faire de changements significatifs dans leur méthode de production. 

Ce concept fait son apparition à la fin des années 80 et a été popularisé dans les années 90. La pratique est cependant plus ancienne: déjà dans les années 60, les entreprises de pesticides se présentaient en bienfaitrices de l’humanité afin de couvrir l’image négative qui faisait surface suite à la parution du livre de Rachel Carson, Silent Spring (qui a notamment mis en avant le lien entre les industries chimiques et la disparition des oiseaux).

Aujourd’hui les exemples de greenwashing ne manquent pas, même chez les entreprises les plus polluantes du monde. Par exemple, Saudi Aramco, l’entreprise la plus polluante du monde selon une étude du Guardian en 2019, met en avant sur son site internet que leur politique prend en compte le changement climatique, ce qui est loin d’être la réalité.

🇬🇧  Greenwashing is a direct consequence of the democratization of ecology in recent decades. Many companies have understood that a large part of consumers want to turn to green alternatives to their usual consumption and have seen the financial potential that the green sector represents. The term greenwashing therefore refers to companies that « green » their image without making significant changes in their production method.

This concept made its appearance at the end of the 1980s and was popularized in the 1990s. The practice, however, is older: already in the 1960s, pesticide companies presented themselves as benefactors of humanity in order to cover the negative image that surfaced following the publication of Rachel Carson’s book, Silent Spring (which notably highlighted the link between chemical industries and the disappearance of birds). 

Today there is no shortage of examples of greenwashing, even among the most polluting companies in the world. For example, Saudi Aramco, the most polluting company in the world according to a study by the Guardian in 2019, highlights on its website that their policy takes climate change into account, which is far from being the reality. 

Décroissance

🇫🇷  La décroissance est un concept et un mouvement qui part du constat que la croissance économique n’est pas compatible avec la durabilité. Elle remet en question la foi en la modernisation technologique de l’écologie et le lien entre la prospérité matérielle et le bien-être. La décroissance n’est pas un synonyme de récession, mais bien une remise en question de la croissance tant idéalisée dans notre société.

🇬🇧  Degrowth is a concept and a movement that stems from the observation that economic growth is not compatible with sustainability. It challenges faith in the technological modernization and well-being. Degrowth is not a synonym for recession, but rather a questioning of the growth so idealized in our society. 

Limites planétaires

🇫🇷 Les limites planétaires sont les indicateurs de différents seuils qui, si dépassés, nuiront durablement les conditions de vie de l’être humain. Elles sont au total de neuf : la couche d’ozone, la biodiversité, la pollution chimique, le changement climatique, l’acidification des océans, l’eau potable, les changements d’occupation du sol, les cycles de l’azote et du phosphore, et la charge atmosphérique en aérosols.

🇬🇧 Planetary boundaries are indicators of different thresholds which, if exceeded, will permanently harm the living conditions of human beings. They are nine in total: the ozone layer, biodiversity, chemical pollution, climate change, ocean acidification, drinking water, land cover changes, nitrogen cycles and phosphorus, and atmospheric aerosol load.
